Perry Como's Winnipeg Connection

TV image of Giselle McKenzie with Perry Como during the Winnipeg number

On May 9, 1960, Perry Como paid a tongue in cheek tribute to Winnipeg in an elaborate production number on his weekly TV program. It number came about because Gisele MacKenzie, who appeared regularly on the program, often mentioned that there were a lot of songs about a lot of cities, but none about her hometown, which of course is Winnipeg. In Response, Perry put Ray Charles and Mitchell Ayres to work on a production number that pays tribute to Winnipeg. You can see a replay of that number on YouTube.

Things to Do in Winnipeg - in 1958

CJNU's announcers enhance our nostalgia music programming by sometimes recalling memories of Winnipeg in the 'old days'. If you'd like a little of that nostalgia right now from the late 1950s, check out this '1958 Winnipeg Visitors' Guide'. In this 24-page brochure, presented here in PDF format, you can read about things people were doing in Winnipeg in the 1950s - who they could see when they went out for entertainment, dining options including the Paddock, where people shopped, where visitors to the city could stay, and much more. Of course, many of the 'things to do' the visitors' guide describes are no longer options in 2010, but it does make interesting reading for people with an interest in nostalgia.

Former Morning Man Red Alix Passes Away

January brought some sad news for long-time Winnipeg radio listeners. Winnipeg radio-legend Red Alix passed away at the Grace Hospital on Tuesday, January 12. He was 83. Red Alex spent 30 years as the host of the morning show on CJOB radio. Many of the volunteers who you hear on CJNU or work behind the scenes at the station had the pleasure of working with Red during his career at CJOB.

Glen Miller was one of those who worked at CJOB during the time that Red Alix was there. He's recorded a two-and-a-half minute audio tribute to Red that includes several short clips from Red's CJOB broadcasts. Click here to listen to it. If the preceding link does not start the audio clip for you, or you would also like to see a photo of Red, please try to click here.

CJNU station manager Bill Stewart was also among those who worked with Red. He says that "Red had a style that was all his own". He will be sadly missed.
