Tom Dercola
CJNU Announcer
I grew up in a household of 78 RPM records - all the big bands from the 30s and 40s. I never outgrew my love for that music.
I retired from teaching after 38 years. It was a journey across five decades. I had the privilege of teaching Grades 7-12 in one school, of offering life's lessons to thousands of students, of being supported by hundreds of colleagues and administrators through thick and thin, of being involved in a life long pursuit of wisdom. It was never a job, never a career but the fulfillment of a dream
In retirement, I have tried to remain active. I 'work' on the warehouse floor at Winnipeg Harvest, walk and socialize dogs at the Humane Society, make deliveries to several non-profit agencies and now I have the opportunity to be a radio announcer.
I host 'That Fifties Show' with all the singers, all the groups, rock and roll, teen ballads, wailing saxes, and twangy guitars from the Fabulous Fifties from noon until 2 p.m. Sundays - and following that 'The Memories Show', which offers the best in swing music and singers from the 30s, 40s and 50s, from 2 - 4 p.m. I take requests for 'That Fifties Show', so if there's something you'd like to hear from that decade on my next program, send me an email at requests@cjnu.ca .
