Shaw Fest 2012
Augustus Does His Bit
January 31 to February 4
Merlyn Productions presents the uproariously funny one-act comedy that George Bernard Shaw called his "true-to-life" wartime farce". Meet Lord Augustus Highcastle - brilliant, handsome and capable (not to mention modest and self-sacrificing), as he would happily remind you from the daring command of his writing desk. Who better to trust with the super-secret list of Allied gun emplacements? An obstinate, over-age clerk who would rather be on the front lines and a beautiful woman with a hidden agenda complete the recipe for comic disaster. With allies like these, who needs enemies? Tuesday, January to Friday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m.. - Saturday, February 4 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. The Ellice Theatre, 585 Ellice Ave at Sherbrook. Admission $10 or ShawPass, Seniors 65+ $7. Tickets Online, or by phone at (204) 415-2714.
Major Barbara
February 1 to 4
The Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre presents Major Barbara, by George Bernard Shaw. Major Barbara, though written over 100 years ago, is still timely and one of Shaw's most important discussion plays. Barbara Undershaft, a major in the Salvation Army, believes by feeding the unemployed and the ne'er-do-wells, she can save their souls. Her father Andrew Undershaft, a rich armament industrialist, believes poverty is the worst crime and his method of offering fair wages is the only way to proceed. Wednesday, February 1 at 7:05 p.m., Thursday and Friday, February 2 and 3, at 8:05 p.m., and Saturday, February 4 at 2:05 and 8:05 p.m.. Tickets $15 - available at the door, or by calling Helene Riesen at 237-6268 or Marie Enns at 474-1684, and from the Box Office at 339-7259 or the general box office 339-7259. Nitrate Treasures: Archival Hudson's Bay Film
Wednesday, February 15, 7:00 p.m.
The Manitoba Historical Society in partnership with the Hudson's Bay Company Archives and Five Door Films will host an event to celebrate the return to Canada of rarely seen films documenting the Hudson Bay Company's activities and first nations communities in the Canadian north in the early 20th century. The screening includes excerpts from the newly transferred nitrate film footage of 'The Romance of the Far Fur Country' which premiered on May 23, 1920, at Winnipeg's illustrious Allen Theatre. The film was then released across Western Canada, and was eventually re-cut for a British version and screened in London. Less than a decade later, the film disappeared from public view. The canisters of film were packed away by the HBC in an archive in London for safe keeping - but lost to the world...until now. The screening will be followed by presentations on the circumstances surrounding the return of the films as well as the projects that are underway to promote them to wider audiences and to the communities represented in the films. A question and answer session and reception to follow. Free admission.
