The Original Big Band Showcase
Sunday Afternoons 4:00 p.m. (Repeated Wednesday 7:00 p.m.)
'The Original Big Band Showcase' with Denny Farrell (left) features the music of the big bands of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and the great big bands of today. Denny has a long history of broadcasting in his very distinctive format that combines Swing, Sweet, Dixieland and Jazz. He brings to his broadcasts an understanding of, and affection for this great music.
Rated as one of the top broadcasters in America, Denny was honoured with the National Ballroom and Entertainment Association's '2001 Award of Excellence' for The Original Big Band Showcase. Denny Farrell was inducted into the Big Band Hall of Fame on February 5, 2003 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He's one of only three announcers to ever receive this honour.
Denny's background is like a who's who in the Big Band/Jazz industry. Announcing chores have tied him to such greats as Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Sammy Kaye, Bob Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ralph Marterie, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Guy Lombardo, Maynard Ferguson, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Red Norvo, Helen Forrest, Peggy Lee, and Artie Shaw to name only a few.
Malts, Mustangs and Memories
Sundays Noon to 2 p.m.
Relive the days of the corner hangout, the feeling of being out on the road with your first car and just remembering those great songs from your youth. Join Tom Dercola every Sunday at noon for Malts, Mustangs and Memories. It's two hours that will take you from the Rock and Roll era in 1956 through soul, disco, the British invasion, folk to the soft rock sounds of the '70s. Listen to Elvis, the Bee Gees the dance crazes of the '60s, Connie Francis, Ricky Nelson and the Beach Boys every Sunday from noon until 2 p.m. And you can even phone in your favourite requests - or send an email to requests@cjnu.ca if there's something you'd like Tom to play on his nex Malts, Mustangs and Memories program.
The Memories Show
Sundays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Tom also takes requests for his program that runs from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., 'The Memories Show'. In this program he presents the best in swing bands and singers from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Listen to the great swing bands from Glenn Miller to Duke Ellington to Benny Goodman, the great singers from Frank Sinatra and Jo Stafford to Billie Holiday and Bing Crosby. Memories are made of this!
