Ed Henderson

CJNU Technical Producer

I was born in Napanee, Ontario. I had a Toronto Evening Telegram paper route while going to school, then later worked at a hardware store in Napanee while attending high school. They sold and serviced radios and TVs so I got interested in radio then.

I graduated from Grade 13 at Napanee Collegiate and Vocational Institute in 1955. I graduated from Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto as an Electronic Technologist in 1958. While attending Ryerson I enrolled in the Canadian Officer Training Plan Reserve with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and then the Royal Canadian Signal Corps attaining rank of Lieutenant in the reserves.

I was an avid shortwave hobbiest in the early 1950s (photo shows Ed using his shortwave radio in 1957). I received my amateur radio license in 1954 and am still very active in amateur radio.

I was employed by A.V. Roe, from May 1958 until February 1959, joining Remington Rand UNIVAC in May 1959 as a maintenance technician on UNIVAC II computer at Ontario Hydro in Toronto, then Sun Life Insurance in Montreal. I worked at various locations for the same company in Toronto, Ottawa and Winnipeg.

I lived in Napanee until 1955, Toronto until 1961, Montreal until 1978, Ottawa until 1985 and then moved to Winnipeg in 1985. I married Irene Hall in October, 1960, and adopted three Black children in 1964, 1966 and 1967. I have held various executive positions with Open Door Society and Manitoba Repeater Society.
