I was born and raised in McCreary, Manitoba, situated along the east slope of Riding Mountain about 70 km north of Neepawa. Music always played a large part in our family as my mother always had something playing on the record player and my sisters generally had a radio playing somewhere in the house. On any given day you could hear Mantovani, Henry Mancini, Herb Alpert or a Scottish pipe band to name a few. However, when I reached my teens I was totally immersed in the rock and roll of the early 1970s. I became a huge classical music listener in the late 1970s during the advent of punk.
However, rewind the tape to 1972. One day my sister came home from college and brought a Glen Miller LP. After the first eight bars of 'In the Mood' I was hooked on swing music and began collecting music from this era. Then I started exploring the jazz music from the 1920s and discovered Paul Whiteman, a host of New Orleans Dixieland jazz bands and, my personal favourite, Bix Beiderbecke. Therefore, my musical tastes are extremely eclectic and range from classical, rag time, early jazz and swing, to rock music from the 1960s and 1970s.
I am currently employed with Stantec Consulting Ltd. as an Archaeologist and, in my spare time, I perform with the band Matchstalk Men.
