Wednesday, February 22 - Comedy Night on CJNU Radio Classics features a couple of men who think they control their homes, but really don't. Our first feature is a visit with comic strip character Blondie. The show lasted on the air from 1939 to 1950, although not many episodes can still be found. Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake star, with Hanley Stafford as Mr. Dithers. Tonight's show was broadcast around 1945, and is titled 'Mr. Dithers Gets Out Of Hospital'. Once again Dagwood is fired from his job, and has to try to get his job back. For our second feature, we have an episode of The Alice Faye/ Phil Harris Show. Phil Harris was the egotistical bandleader on the Jack Benny Show and also the husband of Alice Faye, a movie queen who had given up a fabulous Hollywood career to be a wife and mother. Phil and his side-kick guitar player, Frank Remley were always getting into trouble on the show. In tonight's program, first broadcast May 21, 1950, Alice is nervous about taking the test for her 'Driver's Licence Exam'. The trouble begins when Phil and Frankie drive her to the exam. Elliot Lewis stars as Frank Remley and Walter Tetley is Julius.
Thursday, February 23 - On Mystery and Suspense Night, we open with an episode of Bold Venture, first broadcast on July 2, 1951. Bold Venture brings you adventure, intrigue, mystery and romance starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall together in the sultry setting of Havana and the mysterious islands of the Caribbean. Slate Shannon played by Bogart is the owner and proprietor of a dubious Havana hotel and a boat called the Bold Venture, and Bacall is sailor Duval, his sultry, wisecracking woman. Jester Hairston plays the calypso singer named King Moses, whose intermittent songs incorporate the story as it unfolds. In tonight's episode, Bogie helps a woman who has been kidnapped by a couple, who are trying to steal her property, and then gets involved in a game of Russian roulette. For our second feature, we become involved in the excitement of the dark and unusual tales of Mystery In The Air. Peter Lorre stars in this broadcast from September 18, 1947. It's a story of the terrible events that lead to the sentence of death by hanging for Charles, who was married quite young. Both he and his wife loved animals. Then one day his wife brought home a little black cat, as black as the devil, which she had saved from being chased by a dog. He named the cat Pluto and it became his favorite pet, until, one day, his drinking changed everything.
Friday, February 24 - Variety Night opens with an episode from Avalon Time. Red Skelton is the host and stars in the comedy skits, with his real life wife, Edna Stillwell, who also writes the skits. This was Red's first starring role in a radio series. Music on this variety show is handled by Bob Strong and his orchestra, with Canadian-born Dick Todd and the Avalon Chorus. This episode was broadcast on September 27, 1939. Comedy takes over for our second feature in a February 25, 1948 episode from The Jimmy Durante Show. The "I feel mighty low" man, Candy Candido, supports Jimmy in the comedy area. Peggy Lee and Roy Bargy and his orchestra provide the musical interludes. Jimmy's guest tonight, is that happy little gadabout, Victor Moore, and in their comedy skit, 'Jimmy and Victor Go To The Racetrack'.
