Summer 2015, KFYR Radio in Bismarck, North Dakota celebrated its 90th year. KFYR, an NBC network affiliate was well known to many radio listeners in Manitoba from the 30’s through the early 50’s when local radio choice was limited and reception over long distances was practical. To celebrate its 90th, KFYR produced a TV commercial that included a representative picture of a radio announcer from an earlier time, a very young Tom Bryant in KFYR studio C in 1957. Tom grew up in nearby Napoleon, ND where his Dad published the Napoleon Homestead weekly newspaper. From KFYR, Tom came to CJOB in the early sixties. Bill Stewart, station manager, also at ‘OB’ at the time, remembers meeting this young man “of slight stature with a voice coming from the sub basement”. Tom eventually went to Nashville where he retired after 35 years as Production Manager at WSM, the Grand Old Opry station. Today, of course, Tom is again known to Winnipeg listeners on CJNU, including hosting Music Just for You (6pm, Sunday thru Friday). Tom recently visited Winnipeg, where he and Bill co hosted a show on CJNU and celebrated each other’s 75th birthdays.
