Community Reviews

It’s mid-July and that means it’s time for the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival! This year the festival runs from July 16-27. There are 25 venues and 145 shows to choose from, including local offerings and national andinternational productions.

To get in on the fun, pick up a Winnipeg Fringe Festival program from any liquor commission in the city, or download the PDF on the Fringe website:

I’ll be reviewing some shows this year for CJNU, so be sure to read the latest review here on the website.

Below is the review for Best Friends Forever at Venue 19 (Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain, 340 Provencher Blvd.)

WINNIPEG, MB — Local playwright and director Kennedy Huckerby demonstrates a fine effort with her dramedy, “Best Friends Forever,” a script she developed during her time with Creative Manitoba’s Professional Mentorship Program. As the play begins, we quickly learn it’s the lead character Kaycee’s birthday, and she’ll be celebrating it with her BFF, Ally. The party then expands with the arrival of Kaycee’s long-time boyfriend, Shawn, and a new girl, named Dee, whom no one seems to know. As the play progresses, alliances change and Kaycee begins to question herself, her choices and her future. Eliciting equal parts laughter and pathos, this piece takes a wholly original approach to youth and mental health. It’s a subject that warrants our attention. I’d recommend it.
